Tape recorder are SO 1990s. Today, most music is recorded without the benefit of recording on tape, because modern music recording software is more efficient and less expensive than even “cheap” professional tape recorders were just a decade ago. There are dozens (perhaps hundreds) of different types of recording software packages available, costing into the thousands of dollars for super-professional-quality abilities, down to software that’s absolutely free (but remember the adage about getting what you pay for). For most amateur and semi-professional musicians, good software can be had for plus-or-minus a hundred bucks, and will provide more features and tools than George Martin  had to produce the Beatles’ albums.
