Any time you begin to train an animal, you first need to prepare yourself to be a trainer.  As people respond differently to various stimuli, animals also reaction differently to the world around them.  With horses, building trust is an important foundational step.  However, cats and bird respond much more readily with rewards.  Be smart and research what type of training will work best for your specific animal.  Remember that before your pet can learn how to do any tricks, it needs to be trained basic dog obedience training.  It will need to respond when it is called.  It must obey commands, including stop, go, sit, walk, and stay.  Further, you must establish rules, so that your pet knows whether it can sit on furniture, beg at the table, or jump on people.  Once it has mastered these basic skills, it is prepared for more advanced training.
